TEN in the UK
Norfolk and Suffolk are low lying counties in the east of England which have the driest climate in the UK, and yet also have a very large number of important wetland habitats. Many of these are of international significance and are scheduled at the European level as Special Areas of Conservation and/or Special Protection Areas for wildbirds. But very many wetlands have been lost or damaged over the past 50 years or so for a variety of reasons. The two County Councils have been enthusiastic participants in TEN from its inception, wishing to work together with others at the EU and local levels to contribute to the vision of a network of high quality wetlands in the EU's North Sea Region. They decided to work together to enhance their boundary, which is made up of two rivers, the Waveney and Little Ouse. In partnership with many other local interests a vision for the future of these two valleys was drawn up under an earlier phase of TEN. The major principles of this are that: the following should be improved to their maximum possible potential in order to restore or enhance habitat and landscape throughout the valley systems for the benefit of wetland wildlife and people: The current phase of TEN is beginning to implement this vision. From the intial partnership a new local partnership was forged of a variety of types of interest, of public, voluntary and charitable bodies. This is the vision, the current TEN-sponsored projects and the partners involved: United Kingdom
