The Frogshall Carr project
Frogshall Carr and Fen is a fen edge habitat in the Little Ouse valley. The east end of the site was planted with Alder and Ash in 1940, with much of the remainder being planted with poplar in 1956. Since this time there has been little management of the site. The remaining area is of dense willow scrub. The understorey of the poplar area contains a good relic fen flora with areas of reed. As a result of its lack of direct contact with the river the site is not suffering from excessively high nutrient levels. The project of the Forestry Commission (East Anglia Forest District, England) aims to revert the site to a mixture of ash and alder carr wet woodland and open fen, both of which are English Biodiversity Action Plan habitats and an important contribution to the TEN vision.
