introduction

TEN 3 Offers solutions by implementation of innovative and appealing projects

A. Creating an ecological corridor from point zero in a former river system
The prime project of TEN 3 is the project 'Runde' (Nl) along the watercourse Runde which is a part of the corridor between the Natura 2000 sites 'Dollard' and 'Bargerveen'; with participation of the main authorities and governmental organisations; measures to reconstruct and revitalise the former water course in a more natural way; includes benefits for freshwater resources and economic benefits in horticulture; construction of a walk trail along the course to enhance environmental tourism; separate nature water from the overflow of the Bargerveen as a input in the river system Runde-Ruiten Aa, creating water catchments (also flooding prevention), use of 'nature'-water for glasshouses. The innovative character of the project to split the water system in to two water systems (one high quality nature water and one agricultural water) will be a demonstration of developing an ecological corridor incorporated with a high sustainable use of water and economic development of horticulture and tourism. Interest is shown by private proprietors for starting tourism business. Also contribute the project to the vital condition of the rural community. This is the project which will have an appealing effect not only to the partners but also in the whole North Sea region. Partners will visit this project also bilateral to gain more knowledge on the details. The partners in Groningen, Overijssel and Niedersachsen will use results in their implementation plan developing, ecological and water management aspects will be used in the implementation in the UK.

B. Creating an ecological corridor in a river system
Project 'Waveney/Little Ouse': (Uk) Improving quality of the ecological corridor by implementing 6 projects along 2 rivers (1 corridor) between the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk in Great Britain (East Anglia); participating of 19 governmental and non-governmental organisations; reconstruction/revitalisation/restoration of the water courses, inclusively the embankments on valuable sites; building stepping stones to connect Natura 2000 sites; The second project on this issue is the project Vecht "Junne" (Nl): small scaled pilots: partly removing summer embankment for more water movement within the catchments, removing steep embankment and changing it into natural embankment. These projects will use common knowledge in the implementation, UK and Drenthe will contribute here on implementation experience and project developing knowlegde.

C. Creating an ecological corridor in a transnational water system
Project Brualer Schloot (Ge): implementation of small pilot area as an example and for learning and education purpose. Spatial planning aspects are from interest for the Dutch partners and ecological aspects on connecting two river systems for UK.
